The recent launch of the Ford Maverick made everyone crazy about small pickups. It came as proof that trucks don’t have to cost a fortune, and that the benefits of an open cargo area can be enjoyed for less money. That’s why it’s not a surprise that other carmakers have plans to join the segment as soon as possible. Ram already presented the new Rampage, which debuted in Brazil but should arrive in North America pretty soon. Furthermore, Toyota is preparing its small pickup as well. Finally, we are all looking at Subaru’s next move, because this company has great experience with small pickups. More precisely, we expect to see the 2024 Subaru Baja Pickup Truck – a comeback after two decades.
The new model would probably stick to the same principles as the original. In other words, we would see an engaging small pickup with standard all-wheel-drive, which would beat the competition when it comes to handling, off-road potential and overall driving experience.
2024 Subaru Baja Pickup Truck Design
As for the overall design, things are pretty simple here. The 2024 Subaru Baja Pickup Truck would mimic the original and offer a crew cab layout, with a body style that walks on a fine line between pickup and coupe ute. Once again, the pickup should be based on the Outback. The legendary wagon served as the basis for the original Baja, so we don’t expect things to be any different.
With such a layout, the new Subaru Baja will have a lot of great things to offer, starting from the superior all-wheel drive and low center of gravity, thanks to the boxer engine. Furthermore, we expect to see a versatile and appealing design, and maybe even some pretty serious off-road upgrades, as a part of the Wilderness trim.
Exterior Design
As for the exterior design, we’ve just mentioned that the Outback would once again serve as the basis. So, we would probably see a very similar exterior design. This especially refers to the front-end design, which should stick to Subaru’s contemporary design language. Moreover, we could also see the same wheelbase, though the Baja would probably be a little bit longer. It would feature a little bit longer rear overhang, which would ensure more space in the cargo bed.
Speaking of the cargo bed, we expect to see similar dimensions to segment rivals. Of course, we are talking about Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick, which feature 4- and 4.5-inch beds, respectively. However, we remember Baja’s brilliant technical solution from two decades ago. The original model combined a bed extender with a mid-gate, and that allowed the old pickup to accommodate objects that are up to 7.5 feet long. That’s pretty much on par with full-size trucks.
Interior
We’ve just mentioned that the 2024 Subaru Baja Pickup Truck would follow the segment standards and come in a crew cab layout. We expect the same cabin organization as in the Outback, which means there should be two rows of seats, both spacious enough to accommodate adults with ease.
Besides plenty of space, the Outback features pretty good build quality, with decent materials and a lot of attention to detail. The 2024 Subaru Baja Pickup Truck shouldn’t be much different, though it’s possible to see some savings. In that way, Subaru would be able to cut production costs and form a price that’s more or less on par with Maverick, which is by far the most affordable pickup on the market.
On the other hand, we don’t expect savings when it comes to standard equipment, especially not when it comes to safety. Subaru has always been generous in this aspect, and we see no reason why Baja would be any different.
2024 Subaru Baja Pickup Truck Engines
Once again, we can refer to the Outback. So, the 2024 Subaru Baja Pickup Truck should be offered in two powertrain options. Base models would probably stick to the naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter flat-four, which puts out around 182 horsepower. On the other hand, the turbo-four would be an option. We are talking about the familiar 2.4-liter engine that puts out around 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Both engines would come coupled with a CVT, though the turbo-four could also come in pair with a 6-speed manual.
The biggest advantage over the competition would be the company’s legendary all-wheel drive system which would ensure superior grip and overall off-road potential. Speaking of the off-road potential, we also count on the Wilderness trim, which would bring further upgrades, such as off-road suspension, higher ground clearance, all-terrain tires and many more.
2024 Subaru Baja Pickup Truck Release Date and Price
The 2024 Subaru Baja Pickup Truck is expected to arrive sometime in the next year. As for the price, we think it could be slightly higher compared to the Maverick, at least when it comes to base versions. We presume that the cheapest Baja could cost around 25.000 dollars.
